The prodigious Takashi Miike, responsible for 13 Assassins (SFF 2011), Audition and Ichi the Killer, has made a surprising samurai film, one that questions the notion of samurai honour rather than focusing on choreographed violence. Hanshiro, an impoverished samurai, arrives at the House of Ii and asks to commit ritual suicide in the courtyard. This is not unusual; many down-on-their-luck samurai warriors have made the request expecting a small handout out of pity. The leader of the house tells Hanshiro the story of a warrior whose bluff was called just a few months prior. Hanshiro has his own tale to tell, and what follows is a dramatic story of revenge, honour and disgrace.
